We know so much about the Romans because they had so many Historians.  These men such as Pliny and Tacitus wrote down many things about Roman life, and these writings have been passed down through many generations.

We also know what there towns and roads looked like because many of their remains are the basis of our towns and roads!

How do we know so much question mark

In 79 AD a huge Volcano called Mount Vesuvius erupted, covering the town of Pompeii in larva and hot ash.

This preserved the town and human remains exactly how it was on the day of the eruption.

It is still being excavated today and we are learning more and more about things such as furniture, architecture and food from these diggings.

I'm pleased I don't live near a volcano!
