He is best remembered for his collections of fairy tales though, which have since been translated into over 125 languages and are famous worldwide.
He began writing whilst still in school and his first collection of fairy tales was published in 1836. This edition included famous stories such as ‘The Princess and the Pea’, ‘The Tinderbox’, ‘Thumbelina’, ‘The Little Mermaid’ and ‘The Emperor’s New Clothes’.
Hans Christian Anderson (1805-1875) was a Danish writer and poet, who, as well as his fairy tales, also wrote a number of plays, novels and poems.

Even though these stories are immensely popular today, at the time of publication they were not popular and sales were poor.
It was not until 1845 when his stories began to be published in other periodicals and children’s publication that his popularity began to grow.
Other famous tales by Hans Christian Anderson include ‘The Red Shoes’, ‘The Snow Queen’ and ‘The Ugly Duckling’.
